All women aged 50-71 years who are registered with a GP within our screening area are eligible for screening.
Some ladies aged 49 (who will be 50 in the year of screening) will be identified and invited for screening. As the programme runs over a rolling three year plan some women may not receive their first invitation until they are 53.Women aged 47-49 and 70-73 may also be invited as part of a national age extension trial.
This meets the requirements of the National Breast Screening Programme.
“Failsafe” screening is carried out every month for those women who join the GP practice or enter the screening age after screening in that area has finished, or who will miss their three year due date if they wait until we screen their area.
Women will continue to be routinely invited every three years until age 71. (After this age you can self refer for a mammogram every three years.).
Invitations are sent out by letter about three weeks before the appointment date. An information leaflet will also be sent
